Summer Garage Sales Don’t Sell The Real Valuables

TAGS: None

For many people, summer is a time of vacation, and fun in the sun. For others, it’s work as usual. A garage sale is something many people use as a way to clean out the house, fund a portion of that vacation, or just make some extra side cash. When holding a garage sale, it is important to be careful that you only sell objects that you won’t want later. Also, many garage sale scavengers like to drive a hard bargain. Keep in mind before you start what you want to charge for different items, and don’t let customers drive the price down too much.

In order to have a successful garage sale, don’t put junk, like your children’s old toys, out in front. Split up the good stuff, placing some of it out front, to draw customers, and the rest in the back, so customers will want to go in and browse through everything. It’s also a good idea to organize the objects by category, putting small objects in a box. Make sure to ask all family members before deciding to sell something, so they won’t be upset later.

When preparing for the sale, you may be surprised at the hidden treasures you’ll find within your own home. Don’t sell everything; some of your possessions may be better off sold to a professional. For example, you may be eager to get rid of your son’s musty old coin collection, or your daughter’s broken jewelry. Aside for coin collectors, these objects can easily be sold for cash to an online metal refiner or cash for gold company. Cash for gold companies specialize in the industry, and will recognize the value of your gold, as opposed to a bargain-seeking shopper at the garage sale. If you find gold, put it aside to be dealt with after the sale, at which time you can do the necessary research, and get cash for gold to get the most cash for your precious metals.

You can also make more profit off furniture when you sell it to a second-hand shop than to a consumer. A second-hand furniture seller will repair it, reupholster it, and do what it takes to get the furniture back into good condition. They will then sell it for a decent profit. They will therefore also buy it for more, if the furniture has potential. Many second-hand furniture retailers send a truck to pick up the furniture right away, as opposed to your average consumer who will have to figure out how to get it home. This will also save you the work of lugging it back and forth across your lawn.

Random items are what garage sales are made for and not to sell gold or other expansive items. This may include bikes that your kids have outgrown, toys, household decorative items, or anything else that you haven’t touched in the past year. Price everything in advance, and be organized about it. You will be sacrificing a Sunday, but a garage sale can help you clean out your house, and make a small bundle of cash.
